About SF Ruck Club
We're a small group of San Franciscans who walk with weighted packs. Rucking is cheap, simple, and stupidly effective — and it turns out the city is full of great places to do it.
Our story
It started with a standing Saturday morning walk between two neighbors carrying sandbags. Other people asked if they could come along. Now it's a club.
We meet weekly, usually Saturday mornings, usually around sunrise, usually somewhere with a view. The routes change. The weight stays in the pack. No one gets dropped.
There's no membership, no fee, no app. Just a list of upcoming rucks and a shared understanding that showing up beats almost everything else.
What we care about
Inclusive
Any pace, any pack weight, any starting fitness. First-timers always welcome.
Consistent
Rain or shine. The pattern matters more than any single Saturday.
Adventurous
We'd rather show you a view than hit a target heart rate.
Who this is for
If you can walk for an hour, you can ruck with us. If you want to get stronger, see more of San Francisco, and meet good people doing it, you're in the right place.
Frequently asked
-
What should I bring on a ruck?
A loaded backpack (15–35 lbs depending on your fitness level), sturdy trail or running shoes, two water bottles or a hydration bladder, a snack for longer routes, and layers for San Francisco’s unpredictable weather. A weight vest works too if you prefer that over a pack. Leave the cotton base layer at home — a moisture-wicking shirt makes a real difference on climbs.
-
How heavy should my pack be?
Start light. For your first few rucks, 15–20 lbs is plenty — a couple water bottles and a light plate or a bag of rice will get you there. Once you’re comfortable with the distance, work up gradually toward 25–35 lbs. There’s no minimum weight requirement; showing up is what matters. Heavier is not always better, and joint health beats pack weight every time.
-
How fast do you go?
We ruck at a conversational pace — typically 15 to 17 minutes per mile on flat ground, slower on steep climbs. The goal is to keep the group together, not to race. If you can hold a sentence without gasping, you’re at the right speed. We pause at key viewpoints and regroup at trail junctions, so no one gets dropped.
-
Who is this club for?
Anyone who wants to explore San Francisco on foot while carrying some weight. You don’t need military experience, a CrossFit membership, or even a fancy pack. We’ve had first-timers show up with a school backpack loaded with water bottles — that’s completely fine. If you can walk 3 to 6 miles and you’re curious about what rucking feels like, you belong here.
-
Do you ruck in bad weather?
Generally yes. San Francisco’s version of “bad weather” is usually just fog, drizzle, and wind — all manageable with a rain shell and the right attitude. We do cancel for truly dangerous conditions (lightning, severe storm warnings, or unsafe trail conditions). If a ruck is cancelled or delayed, we’ll send an email to the list the evening before and post in the group by 6 AM morning-of.
-
How much does it cost to join?
Nothing. SF Ruck Club is free. We’re not a gym, a franchise, or a subscription service — just a group of people who like to walk hills with heavy packs. The only thing you need to spend money on is your pack and whatever you put in it. There are no dues, no fees, and no upsells.
-
How do I RSVP or cancel?
RSVP through the event page — we ask for your name and email so we can send a morning-of reminder with any last-minute route changes or weather notes. If you need to cancel, no action required; there’s no penalty and no one will follow up. Just don’t sign up if you’re not somewhat likely to come — it helps us gauge group size for routing decisions.
-
I've never rucked before. Is this okay for me?
Yes, and you’re exactly who this club is designed for. First-timers are welcome at every event. Show up a couple minutes early, introduce yourself, and let the group know it’s your first ruck — someone will walk with you and make sure you’re comfortable with the pace and route. The Baker Beach Sunrise is our most beginner-friendly event if you want to start easy.
